The Operating System and the Development of the PC

Conclusion

 

The past thirty years has witnessed a technological revolution. The PC industry has produced a rapid succession of hardware developments, with each generation of machine adhering to the tenets of Moore's Law. Yet little of this would have been achievable without a corresponding evolution of the operating system. This has released the computer from the exclusive domain of government, science and corporate business. It has also created an industry generating enormous wealth.

The struggle to control the operating system used by the masses is set to continue for the foreseeable future. The consequences of the action between the US government and Microsoft are far from clear, but the short history of the PC industry indicates that two components will persist. The first is constant change; the other is Bill Gates and Microsoft.
