About This Section - The Internet

 

This section is based on Module 3 of T171, as presented in 2000. After completing this module, students were expected to demonstrate an understanding of, or a familiarity with:

  • The history of how the Internet was conceived, specified, designed and constructed.
  • How the technology behind the Internet works
  • The Internet's significance, power and potential
  • Some of the personalities whose thinking and work led, directly or indirectly, to the creation of the Internet and the World Wide Web.
  • The role played by the key institutions in the story - for example, MIT, ARPA, RAND, the National Physical Laboratory and CERN.
  • The distinctive subculture which has grown around the Internet.

The three themes of the module were:

  • Institutions
  • Personalities
  • Technologies
